For
this exercise your study group may hand in a single assignment. When submitting assignments, please include your name and the assignment
number as part of the filename.
Please write the names of your study group members at the beginning of
your homework. These assignments will be
made public and available to all members of the class.
1. Using the PUMS data, consider the "Tiger Moms" question: in what ways are immigrants different from native-born people? Are there systematic differences depending on where they're from? Evaluate whether "culture" seems like a plausible explanation. (Joint/marginal tables of probabilities would seem like a good method to use.)
2. Suppose you were to create a ranking of different heritages/ethnicities, based on "success" in NYC. What measures from PUMS would you include? Who wins your ranking? Evaluate.
3. Find some data and evaluate how well Benford's Law characterizes the digits. How does it change if you use levels, changes, or growth rates?
