Grading Formulae:
Homework is
graded as check-plus, check, check-minus; late homework is discouraged and
penalized. The grades convert at 10,8,6; late are half
that amount. Late homeworks are still better than nothing, since missing
homework is 0.
Exams are scored
as a fraction of possible points. Note that all performance is relative: if the
average student scored 20/75 then 30/75 is good! To reward improvement, if the
final score is higher than the midterm score, the midterm is dropped from
calculation.
The final grade
is calculated by equally weighting the homework average, midterm score, and
final score, which are then ranked to determine each student's position in the
class. You have an option of a "high-risk" grading scheme, which
counts just the exams -- more information is on the class web page.
Your grade is
determined by the work done during the term, in the same manner for every
student in the class. No subsequent extra credit work can compensate for poor
exam and homework grades. Don't even bother to ask. Also, no incompletes!
